Broadside Advertisement for the Hawk Model Aeroplane Company
Chicago, IL: Hawk Model Aeroplane Co, 1930. Broadside. Monochrome; This is a small broadsheet (approx. 9" x 14") advertisement from the Hawk Model Aeroplane Co, which later became Hawk Model Company. The Broadside is in Fair / Good only condition, with edge tears, nicks and chips missing. There is a burn mark with tidemarking to the upper right quadrant. "Hawk Model Airplanes was established in 1928 by brothers Dick (Sr. ) and Phil Mates in Chicago, Illinois. Promoted as "America's Oldest Model Company", the company was purchased by the Testors Corporation in 1970. The Hawk Company assets were later acquired by J. Lloyd International, Inc. Of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, which, in turn, sold them to Round 2 LLC of South Bend, Indiana in 2013. From its inception in 1928 to the early 1950s the company manufactured a successful line of solid-wood aircraft models, which eventually included injection-molded generic plastic propellers. The Mates brothers exhibited built-up and painted plastic models at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1934. During World War II, Hawk helped to supply plastic identification models for use in military training." (from Wikipedia). Fair .

[EPHEMERA] [AVIATION] [PHOTOGRAPHS], Group of Four Aviation Photographs from 1910 (Apparently from Flugfeld in Puchheim)
[EPHEMERA] [AVIATION] [PHOTOGRAPHS]
Group of Four Aviation Photographs from 1910 (Apparently from Flugfeld in Puchheim)
Pucheim, Germany, 1910. Other. B&W Illustrations; This is a group of four small photographs (3.5" length x 2.5x height) possibly on salted paper of airplanes flown at the Munich Air Race of 1910. The reverse of the photographs give basic descriptions, including the place -- Puchheim and the Aviators. The grpou of for prints come with an autograph (handwritten) statement from the owner giving them to a friend for his aviation collection. The aviators include: Emil Jeannin, Dr. Otto Lindpaintner and Gustav Otto. While Emil Jeannin is listed as one of the five pilots engaged for this race, the other three aviators were apparently running in the same circles / groups and likely brought their planes with them. "The Munich "Akademie für Aviatik" was founded in 1909, mainly by members of the Royal Bavarian Automobile Club. Its main aim was promoting aviation, particularly by flying dirigibles and other flying machines. This included building an airfield with all necessary installations, but also creating a library and a museum and the awarding of prizes for competitions. Suitable grounds for an airfield were found in the village of Puchheim, 15 kilometres west of central Munich, where 76 hectares of moorland was bought and leased. A modern and completely equipped airfield with a two-kilometre race course was built. It was decided to celebrate the opening of the airfield by organizing an "aviation week" of five days in the end of May, starting less than a week after the Berlin-Johannisthal spring meeting. Five pilots were engaged. Emil Jeannin, Baron Pierre de Caters and Ellery von Gorrissen came directly from the Berlin meeting, where the two former had been very successful. They were accompanied by Belgian Jules Tyck on a Blériot and local Munich man Simon Brunnhuber on one of the Antoinettes bought by Walther Huth, who would later start the Albatros company." [EPHEMERA], [WORLD WAR I] [AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY], [SCRAPBOOKS]
World War I Scrapbook of a United States Aerial Photographer / Observer
France: Self Published, 1918. Flexible covers. B&W Illustrations; World War I Scrapbook (13" x10" approx) with 48 pages from an instructor at the Second Aviation Instruction Center at Tours France, 1918. The scrapbook was the property of, and photographed by James F(Fred) Chappell, who is best known as one of the early photographers at the Lick Observatory, and for whom the Chappell Crater on the Moon is named. The scrapbook includes 48 pages of various sized photographs taken by Chappell, starting with photographs of shipboard activities on the transport from the US to Tours, France, candid photos of France and the French rural folk on their travel from the coast to Tours, and then to the compound of 2nd AIC (Second Aviation Instruction Center) which was founded by the French at the Tours Aerodrome and then given over for the use of the United States as a place for instructors in aerial observation and aerial gunnery to teach students. James F. Chappell became an instructor in Aerial Observation -- and ironically because the airplanes were crashing so often and had so many injuries and fatalities, Chappell and other instructors were forbidden from flying into combat, to keep from having excessive losses in the instructor corps. The latter half of the scrapbook includes many photographs of different styles of airplanes (both whole, and in pieces) , the ambulance crew, fire brigade, the camera guns, and aerial photographs and sundry accoutrement dealing with aerial photography, gunnery or observation. There are several rank advancement tickets, small souvenirs and occasional newspaper clippings associated with the school. Chappell graduated as one of the first classmen of the U. S. Army Aerial Photography class held at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. In all 278 photographs plus other ephemera regarding Chappell's tour of duty, starting from his transport in the US to the fields of Tours, France. This scrapbook holds an amazing amount of visual information regarding the early days of the Army Air Corps which became the United States Air Force in 1947.. Very Good .

AMES AERONAUTICAL LABORATORY / NATIONAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE FOR AERONAUTICS
Group of 16 Black and White Photographs from the Naca, Ames Aeronautical Laboratory at Moffett Field, Ca C1944-1958
Moffett Field, CA: National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, 0. Hardcover. B&W Illustrations; This group of sixteen 8" x 10" black and white photographs from the NACA Ames Aeronautical Laboratory all have the NACA logo and photograph identification inside the photo and an identifier notation at the bottom edge of the white outer border. The photos themselves mostly cover the the use of Schlieren photography at supersonic or subsonic speeds or the wind tunnels in which the photography was produced. The photographs are all in Very Good+ condition. Two of the photographs have ink stamped designation from NACA which has been crossed out with blue pen. Unfortunately the photos are undated but can be positively dated between 1944 and 1958. "On 9 August 1939, as World War II began, Congress authorized the construction of a second National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) laboratory for urgent research in aircraft structures. Ground was broken for the laboratory at Moffett Field, California, in December 1939 and operations began in early 1941. NACA named the facility "Ames Aeronautical Laboratory" in 1944 in honor of Dr. Joseph S. Ames, leading aerodynamicist and former president of Johns Hopkins University. Wind tunnels are central to Ames' history. Several wind tunnels were opened in the 1940s to test and refine aircraft, guided missiles, satellites, and reentry bodies. Of particular note are three tunnels later designated key national resources. The 40 x 80-foot wind tunnel opened in June 1944 to conduct aircraft development work. The 12-foot subsonic wind tunnel, opened in July 1946. The Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel enabled Ames to conduct new research; almost all NASA manned space vehicles, including the Space Shuttle, were tested in the Unitary." (from Wikipedia). Very Good+ .

Originally developed by UK manufacturer Hawker Siddeley in the 1960s, the Harrier emerged as the only truly successful V/STOL design of the many attempted during that era, despite being a subsonic aircraft, unlike most of its competitors. It was conceived to operate from improvised bases, such as car parks or forest clearings, without requiring large and vulnerable air bases. Later, the design was adapted for use from aircraft carriers.". Very Good+ .

Color Illustrations; This is a small, newspaper style journal made up of two sheets of paper, folded along the spine, and again horizontally. The journal is in Very Good+ condition and was issued without a dust jacket. "British Aerospace plc (BAe) was a British aircraft, munitions and defence-systems manufacturer. Its head office was at Warwick House in the Farnborough Aerospace Centre in Farnborough, Hampshire. In 1999 it purchased Marconi Electronic Systems, the defence electronics and naval shipbuilding subsidiary of the General Electric Company plc, to form BAE Systems. The company was formed in the United Kingdom as a statutory corporation on 29 April 1977 as a result of the Aircraft and Shipbuilding Industries Act. This called for the nationalisation and merger of the British Aircraft Corporation, Hawker Siddeley Aviation, Hawker Siddeley Dynamics and Scottish Aviation. In 1979 BAe officially joined Airbus, the UK having previously withdrawn support for the consortium in April 1969. In accordance with the provisions of the British Aerospace Act 1980 the statutory corporation was changed to a public limited company (plc) , under the name British Aerospace Public Limited Company, on 1 January 1981. On 4 February 1981 the government sold 51.57% of its shares. The British government sold its remaining shares in 1985, maintaining a £1 golden share which allows it veto foreign control of the board or company.". Very Good+ .

By the late 1920s and the early 1930s, among the firm's completed zeppelins were the Pony, Pilgrim, Puritan, Volunteer, Mayflower, Vigilant, Defender, Reliance, Resolute, Enterprise, Ranger, and Columbia. Most of these ships utilized helium to become airborne, while zeppelins originally used heated air or hydrogen. During this period, other companies, especially European ones, were constructing airships to transport passengers, including across the Atlantic Ocean. Goodyear also manufactured two airships, the Akron and the Macon, for the United States military during the early 1930s. During World War II, the company manufactured 104 airships for the military at its Akron facility." This book was updated and published annual since 1925.. Very Good+ .
